GPX map: BTU February Training Camp 2023 | 22.7 km Trail Running Route on Strava
From the Gap Park n Ride, we are approximately 1.3km from the start line so we can warm up and head over there.
This is then followed by 18.5km along the BTU30. It is at this point after Simpson's Falls bridge, that we pull off and make our way back to where we started via the old course - Python Track. But before we get there, we may meet with the Wild Earth Kokoda Climb (8.6km in), followed by the Red Bull Climb (15.3km in). Yes, I think we will definitely need some wings for these and thanks to Red Bull Australia, we will have some cans ready for us.
We've also mentioned there will be two groups.
If running the flats and hike the hills is the go, or you're looking at a cruisier pace, then please join me for a 5am start. We will aim for a 4ish hr finish.
No one gets left behind.
I hear that there may also be a special guest lurking around. Jodie Oborne, ultrarunning legend who previously held the Australian 100mile record for women at 15hr 33m 56sec! so please look out for her in and around Mt Coot-Tha
The 6am group will take off at 6am and will be lead by our very own Brisbane Trail Ultra race director and ultrarunning legend Shona Stephenson. Trail superstar Hayley Teale will be joining this group! Get your training legs ready, as both Shona and Hayley will keep a competitive pace and try to catch us early starters. Ursula Adam’s BTU110 2nd place and Ultra Trail Kosi 6th will also be joining us plus we might have another special guest. Stay Tuned. Please don't be daunted though as no one gets left behind.
There will be times for a quick breather at the tops of climbs and also some knowledge sharing amongst us all. You'll also have the option of swapping groups when we meet up.
Nutrition, hydration, poles, gear, shoes, and so on.
What else to expect?
The first part of the course is a little technical and rocky underfoot. If you're prone to ankle rolls, I would definitely recommend strapping them up.
This is also where good trail shoes would be worthwhile. I also mentioned climbs. Poles are helpful and allowed on the BTU trails.
Nutrition
We're going to be out there for a few hours so please make sure you bring enough fuel for the entire run.
Please don't underestimate a 22.7km trail run with 850m climbing.
We're fortunate to have Hammer Nutrition Australia look after us for this camp. You will get to try some of the recommendations for the BTU20 and BTU30 course on track. Fuelling and hydrating properly is an important part of training. Watch this space for some more information on these topics.
Don't forget about our special BTU discount code: BTU
Hydration
Please bring a water carrying capacity of 1L. If it is hot, this might change and we may suggest you carry a little more.
There will be a tap at the start line (at Corra-Mulling Park), a tap at Gap Creek Reserve (7.5km in), Mt Coot-Tha lookout (12.5km in), JC Slaughter Falls (15.3km) and Brushbox picnic area (20km in).
Toilets
There are toilets at Walkabout Creek a few hundred metres from the Gap Park n Ride and at the associated water taps - Gap Creek Reserve (7.5km in), Mt Coot-Tha lookout (12.5km in), JC Slaughter Falls (15.3km) and Brushbox picnic area (20km in).
Suggested first aid
You will be required to carry a snake bite bandage on the day, so why not practice carrying it early? Although we hope never to use one, we are in summer in Qld. These bandages are also great for helping others. We recall patching up someone on Mt Coot-Tha last year who fell on the Mahogany trail as we were descending and we were very happy to be able to assist other fellow runners.
We will have a first aid kit with us always.
After the run
We will have a bit of a debrief and recovery snacks and hydration after the run and will take this opportunity to have a chat and go through any questions you may have from the morning or anything for your upcoming run.
Please feel free to bring questions along!
Other Goodies!
We've already mentioned there will be Red Bull Energy and Hammer Nutrition products out on course.
Wild Earth have kindly offered all our participants a "spend $150 and get $25 off" to kickstart your mandatory gear requirements.
Along with this generous offer, T8 are back and can you believe we will all be receiving a voucher for a pair of commandos worth $35? I'll be in sherpa shorts on the run.
If you need help with getting the right gear - poles/shoes/packs for the training day, please head into Wild Earth and get fitted. They have a store in Brisbane and Burleigh and are very experienced.
Please keep an eye out for updates on the training camp here, and if there are any questions at all, please don't hesitate to contact us.
