MaXi Race Results - Wild Earth Training Camp - Get Organised.
Spartan Trail World Championship hosted it’s third race on the 2023 Calendar. This year the renowned MaXi Race Annecy joined the lineup. Here is a little piece of the action.
Eight years after the Trail Running World Championships, the MaXi-Race is back for its 13th edition with some of the world’s best international athletes. With more than 6,500 trail runners signed up to challenge themselves at the iconic, MaXi-Race. Famous for its spectacular views of the French Alps, playing host to 46 different nationalities around Lake Annecy and completing the Spartan Trail Ultra distance (87km) or the Spartan Trail Run distance (40km) through the mountains.

In the race’s marquee 88-kilometre distance (55 miles), and on a course that gains 5,000 meters (16,400 feet), Miguel Arsenio (Portugal) toppled the competition and the record books. He squeezed four minutes off the former course best with an 8:40 finish. Arsenio’s on a hot streak. He was second at Transgrancanaria in February to start the year.
Aurélien Dunand-Pallaz (France) and Simon Gosselin (France) followed the race winner in 8:50 and 8:53, respectively.
The women’s race didn’t run as close, and the winner was nearly an hour better than third place. Up front, Fiona Porte (France) dominated in 10:15. She was third in the marathon-distance race here last year. Sandra Sevillano (Spain) was second in 10:47, and Varvara Shikanova (Russia) was third in 11:06.

Only in the final kilometres did BTU30 2022 winner Antonio Martínez (Spain) overhaul a fading Robert Pkemoi Matayango (Kenya). Martínez got to the line in 4:00, and Pkemoi Matayango was there 15 seconds later. Anthony Felber (France) nearly caught Pkemoi Matayango too, but was third in 4:01, 17 seconds behind the runner up. The lead group of three was over four minutes ahead of fourth place.
The women’s race ran to the very end too. Anne-Lise Rousset (France) and Ruth Croft (New Zealand) dueled all day and were just over a minute apart at the end. Rousset finished in 4:53 and Croft in 4:54. Anne-Cecile Thevenot (France) was third in 5:04.

June Training Camp Day 2 - 18km
I have consistently clocked over 19km on my watch 4 years running this same route and have hit just under 1000m vertical climb.
We will be running back out to Dundas Bushcamp CP4 and follow the 100mile course from here for 15km before heading back from Taylor's break (showing you the Standpipe turn off) back to the start location.
Estimated running time:
3-4.5 hours
This has been the range of times we have previously run for this route and please remember many of us are backing up from the day before.
Some additional notes:
This part of the D'Aguilar National Park can be slippery so please make sure you have shoes you very much trust. I would highly recommend strapping your ankles if you have had any issues before as I can personally vouch that this is absolutely a must for me.
The terrain is loose and uneven (but fun!). Trust your shoes. Jump into Wild Earth Australia beforehand and their experienced staff will look after you. You may have seen the Saucony Peregrine 13s around. I'm a huge fan and most likely my shoe choice.
Mandatory Gear to carry:
As with any long run, we can carry some first aid supplies but it is good practice to have your own supplies with you. Best time to
We recommend carrying a minimum of-
Snake bandage
Space blanket
thermal top
minimum 1.5L water at the start of the run (I will normally carry 2 L as we will have a stop approx every 20km for Saturday and no stops on Sunday)
nutrition- minimum 200Ca on your person (we are fortunate to have Hammer Nutrition with us so if you would like to try these this is your last chance before race day)
Electrolytes- I like separating nutrition and hydration and therefore take Hammer gels separate to Hammer endurolytes. You'll have a chance to try both on the training camp (there will be some in your Wild Earth goodies bag too)
Energy- I take red bull 50-50 mixed in water and I find that gives me a gradual kick over the course of a long run. Definitely will need this as we head up Side break.
If you'd like to try your poles on this terrain, definitely a great time to pull them out.
I will contact you closer to the run with whether we will need to carry thermals and wet weather gear.
At the end of the run, we will have some recovery snacks and we also have a few goodies coming your way via Wild Earth Australia (keen to see what is in their goodies bags!).
Along with a "get $25 off when you spend $150" Wild Earth voucher, there'll also be a 20% Suunto watch discount (looking forward to using the Suunto Vertical on this camp!), Julbo eyewear voucher and a free pair of T8 commandos on offer for you (please let me know if you do not wish to share your emails for any of these goodies)
Happy trails and please keep an eye on more emails for further information on the training camps.
Kind regards
Cora & Shona
