It’s time to get trail fit and be involved with the Wild Earth Brisbane Trail Ultra® Spartan® Trail World Championship Training Camps 2023. We can’t wait to meet the BTU 2023 Trail Running Community out on the trails and share some trail secrets with you. We are super stoked to announce that 2nd place BTU110 Ursula Adams has joined our BTU STWC team; she is fresh from racing and placing 6th at Ultra Trail Kosciuszko. Ursula is also a coach with first-hand practical experience on how to approach your first ultra or trail running event. She will also be helping us with your sweat tests.
What is a Sweat test?
Sweat tests are easy to perform, we weigh in all our entrants at the start and the completion of the Wild Earth BTU - STWC camp and perform a Sweat Test. This is a simple way to teach you about hydration and nutrition, your own body, and what it needs for racing and training. Most entrants find this enlightening.
What do we look for?
You don’t put on weight - HUGE Warning Sign! You have your electrolytes all wrong and are at risk of Hyponatremia which means your sodium levels are at dangerously low levels.
You lose around 2% of your body weight.
We want to see weight loss.
If you lose more than this, we chat with you about how you are feeling and check you for signs of dehydration.
Smelly Pee
Dark Yellow in Colour
Brown Pee - Go Stright to the hospital
Red Pee - You’ve eaten beetroot!
Exercise-induced hematuria - blood in it should clear after a few days.
We chat about your nutrition and what could have upset your system and created the inflammation.
Headaches
Dry Mouth and Spittle.
Dizziness
Over the past 5 years of testing at the Brisbane Trail Ultra, we’ve experienced sweat rates from about 0.5 litres per hour to just over 2.5L/hr. Shona has been testing her Ultra Training Australia clients since 2013 and has seen similar results with the odd bloke sweating 10L on during a sweat test! If they look good and this is normal for them, that’s okay too. It’s important that you learn about your body and what your body needs to stay safe and cramp-free whilst out training or racing.
The most common amount of fluid to plan for is 1-1.5L/hr is a ‘normal’/moderate sweat rate (for a healthy adult) during prolonged exercise of reasonable intensity.
While we’ve seen very high sweat rates (upwards of 3L/hr) in a handful of athletes, it tends to be in very, very big guys (men do tend to have higher sweat rates than women), and those working incredibly hard in oppressively hot and humid conditions.
Why is it essential to perform a sweat test?
We have a sweat test in the BTU110 and BTU100Mi to catch runners after 45km and see if they are in good health before they take on the next section of their race. We are the most challenging event per kilometre in Queensland with the highest ITRA points possible therefore we are proactive with our safety measures for our athletes while they are on our course. We do this to ensure the runner is conscious of their hydration and nutrition while on our course.
What will happen on Race Day?
We weigh each runner in at the start line and write the weight on the race bib. You are then weighed in at Checkpoint 2 Mount Nebo State School 45km mark.
The medic will weigh each athlete at Checkpoint 2 and check their motor skills, as they have to remove their pack and put their group back on again; they also will have a quick chat with the medic and let them know how they are feeling.
The medic will look for around 2% (2-3kgs if you weigh 100kgs or 1-1.5kg if you weigh 50kgs) body weight loss. If the runner has lost more than this and they can explain that this is normal for them, or they’ve had a massive dump since the start and feel great, then that is fine, and the runner will be cleared to run on.
This will all happen while your support crew or our checkpoint volunteers can refill your water bottles and grab your drop bag.
If the runner has lost more than 3% and isn’t looking good and showing the above signs of dehydration, they will be asked to rehydrate at the Checkpoint, which will always be with the electrolytes we provided or your electrolytes.
If the runner has put on weight, we will follow the advice of the medical command on the day.

Why do we love Hammer Nutrition Australia?
We Lover Hammer Nutrition because they have in our opinion the BEST Electrolytes on the market, Hammer Endurolytes. If you start with your electrolytes, then everything else falls into place. We then love their;
Anti Fatigue Caps - Prolongs endurance in ultra workouts and races, assists energy production, helps prevent muscle cramping, and counteracts everyday fatigue. These are pretty effective, I can’t have them every day as they keep me awake!
Race Caps Supreme - Helps reduce muscle fatigue, increases energy & endurance, helps increase workload capacity, Aids recovery
Perpetuem - Fuel that protects your muscles for events/training runs over 3 hours, maximises fat utilisation, helps prevent muscle fatigue
Heed - Shorter Training Runs or a kicker at key times in your race, steady, consistent energy with NO sugar crash, buffer lactic acid, help prevent cramps, supports dental health
Gels - Long-chain complex carbohydrates for smooth, consistent energy release. There’s only a trace of sugar, so Hammer Gel doesn’t set off wild insulin spikes causing “sugar high” and “sugar crash.” You won’t find our products saturated with cheap, ineffective, commercial-grade sugars, which can ruin health and performance.
Hammer BARS are AMAZING! - I cut these in 1/2 they are rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein and healthy fats. Additionally, we’ve suggested choosing organic options when possible and avoiding added simple sugars and gluten at any cost.
Vegan Recovery Protein and Bars - Whole, organic, raw-food sources. Containing no added refined sugars, these delicious bars are the ready-to-roll solution for the active individual. Soft, easy to eat, digest, and assimilate, Hammer Bars are a great complement to any fueling system. They provide nutrient-dense complex carbohydrates, complete vegetable proteins, and healthy fats. You can share them with any friend worry-free. They are certified vegan and kosher, and free of GMO’s and gluten.
