PUTTING ON A RACE LIKE THE BTU IS A HUGE TEST OF PEOPLE POWER, LOGISTICS, RISK MANAGEMENT, ATHLETE SAFETY, CATERING, ATMOSPHERE CREATION, MUSIC SELECTION, POST- RACE PARTY VIBE TO BRING YOU THE BEST EXPERIENCE ON OFFER IN AUSTRALIA. WE HEARD THAT EVERYONE FLEW UP THOSE STAIRS LIKE THEY WERE NOTHING, KNOWING THE FINISH LINE WAS JUST THERE WITH THE PARTY PUMPING AND WAITING FOR YOU.

Our course needs permits and approvals from Police, Brisbane City Council, Transport and Main Roads, Queensland Department of Housing and Infrastructure, Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, Moreton Bay Regional Council, SEQ Water and more. We have police and traffic controllers present at key road crossings to safely bring our runners into the finish line for 12-hours on Saturday, meaning that our lead runners from the BTU60, BTU110 and BTU100Mile had police and traffic controllers for their race plus all of the BTU10 and BTU30. On Sunday morning the marshalls and police came back to again usher all runners who were on the course at 06:00am - 09:00 am, meaning the BTU20 and BTU100Mile and BTU110 morning arrivals were also treated like royalty and had the traffic controllers for them when coming into the urban streets of Brisbane.

THE REACTION AT THE FINISH LINE FROM THE RUNNERS IS WORTH EVERY CENT, MAKING SURE YOU HAVE THE BEST POSSIBLE EXPERIENCE WHEN OUT ON COURSE.

WE DID ALL THIS AND WORKED AROUND THE TOUR DE BRISBANE ROAD CLOSURES AND COURSE CROSSOVERS, AND WE DID IT IN STYLE, WITH THE ONLY HOLD UP WAS THE DROP BAGS RETURNING TO THE FINISH LINE DUE TO THE ROADS BEING CLOSED AROUND JC SLAUGHTER FALLS UNTIL 1 PM. WE HAVE TO THANK RUNNERS FOR THEIR PATIENCE WITH THE RETURN OF THOSE DROP BAGS.

BTU Presentations.jpg

We pushed out boundaries this year, changed the finish line to be at the top of the Kangaroo Cliffs, meaning we have to be totally self-sufficient for the event, prepared for all weather conditions, to provide shelter, burgers, chips, beer, and recovery food.

The team behind our event is massive and I would like to thank all those who are involved.

We will start at rego.

Our BTU team is still really small, with Cora, Mora, and Shona holding the fort, as our festival manager Tyler Stewart, was stuck in Perth with the border closures. It is the trail running community that helps this race to be super special and we can’t thank you enough. Adam, Shona’s partner also joined the team with both sponsoring the BTU110 Prize money with Australian Expatriate Finance but he is also out on the course helping with the drop bags and logistical supplies between Start, Finish, CP6 and CP5. Mora managed the finish line and helped out with athlete interviews and media on the day.

Shona Stephenson, Brisbane Trail Ultra Race Director.jpg

We also have Alun from AAA racing helping us in the national park with logistics and managing the CP2, CP3, CP4. He keeps an eye on the event for us and helps find lost runners or fixes course markers if they have been tampered with. He also helped out with MCing at the start line.

THIS WAS A LONGER AND BIGGER EVENT THAN IN 2019, 2020 SO WE NEEDED EXTRA SUPPORT IN THE OPS ROOM.

Massive thank you to Nicole and Karen for the extra help supporting Cora in the Ops room for the 36 Hour event!

WE ALSO HAD AN OPS ROOM MANAGER, THE AMAZING TRACEY FROM ASSIST FIRST AID,

SUPPORTED BY ETHAN FROM 1300 MEDICS WITH THEIR TWO ROAMING VEHICLES.

BTU TEAM VOLUNTEERS THANK YOU

COURSE MARKERS (THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE MARKING!)-

As we had a shortened set up period due to the snap lockdown, we needed a lot more assistance with course marking. So a huge thank you must go to Geoff Russell for coming out as soon as lockdown ended to help Cora start marking Saturday evening until late. Then again, Gus and Alec Green joined us on Sunday along with Shane, Alicia, Dave, Nick and Tim from AAW to mark in style on wheels.

As time was running short, we were also very thankful of the help from Joel Hillier for marking the final urban section of course, from Paddington into the city on foot by himself, and in the rain!

Robyn Robertson took a full day out of the week to help mark the section from the top of Jones break and down to Gap Creek Rd, and then all around Mt Coot-Tha!

And you will see her name here again as she then helped us sweep at a very dark and cold hour, removing her own hard work!

A huge thank you to Brendan Turner for calling in during his BTU100mile run to let us know of some missing markers. I was also happy to then have his crew and pacers Kim Turner, Dave Vroom, Russell Pertot jump straight in to help us fix it! Jen & Mark Watterson in the meantime were our amazing fore-runners and marshals, helping us direct the runners up the mountain the correct way. A huge thanks must also go to Hayley Teale for looking after us and getting some downed markers back up for the 110km and 100 mile runners.

COURSE FORE RUNNERS AND SWEEPERS-

This was a huge team of people that put their time and care into looking after our runners. You’ll see there will be some names that have already been mentioned so you can see the amount of support these individuals have for us and fellow runners. Thanks to everyone for looking after the safety of the BTU runners. You can see from some of these start times that it wasn’t just a walk in the park. It wasn’t just the time many of these legends started, but the amount of markers they carried with them along a very long stretch of course.

Hats off to everyone.

There are also a list of serial sweepers in this list including Ness and Deb (third sweep in a row!!)

A SPECIAL MENTION TO THE ARMY RESERVISTS FROM 11ER WHO TOOK THE TIME OUT TO SUPPORT THE BRISBANE TRAIL ULTRA. WHAT AN AMAZING COMMUNITY.

MARSHALS

THE 42 FOR 42 TEAM LOOKED AFTER US THROUGH THE SUBURBAN SECTOR!

PLEASE CHECK OUT MORE ABOUT 42 FOR 42 AND THEIR ROLE IN THE BTU BELOW.

BUT LET’S NOT FORGET THE BTU VOLUNTEER LEGENDS THAT WERE ALSO IN THE WIND AND COLD UP THE MOUNTAIN.

Sheree Rowling and Hayley Teale dropped in to visit runners at Jolly’s Lookout and as Gillian Davison was called away from marshalling here (by me!) to help out elsewhere, Sheree and Hayley became integral with making sure runners knew where they were going. I also have to give Jodi Anderson and Morgan Nierfeld a huge shout out as they looked after runners crossing Sir Samuel Griffith Drive at Mt Coot-Tha. This is a very important spot as they look after the safety of the runners crossing where cars and cyclists often move quickly. Plus Sharee and Hayley also doubled back to our start line and helped out with rego for the BTU30, plus race a lift of a DNF runner back to the city as well.

Brisbane Trail Ultra Track Me Live.jpg

GPS TRACKER - TRACK ME LIVE - SHAUN AND HENRICO, BERNADETTE, AND THEIR FAMILY.

I think Henrico and Bernadette know the tracking system better than anyone else! they have been integral in helping out with fitting ultra runners with trackers so we can safely track them through the ultra distances.

Plus we also had volunteers at the Start line from Australian Army Reservist Chris Yarrow, and Rita Ruan

Thank you Henrico and Bernadette again for your time with helping fit trackers, before Henrico took off to help set up CP1 and then later to become a CP1 legend with the Bunyaville Trail Runners

START LINE VOLUNTEERS - RED BULL PARTY DJ, RED BULL INFRASTRUCTURE- RED BULL ARCH

The fun for us started well before midnight and the assistance we had leading up was critical, as registrations closed at 8pm, and things had to be moved around so the start line was set up for a midnight start.

Thanks to Coby Wise for moving things from the finishing line to the start line at such short notice. Also to all the volunteers that came in to help us ensure the runners were all set to take off on their BTU journey.

ASSIST FIRST AID, 2X ROAMING MEDICS, PLUS A MEDIC AT EACH CP, TOWNSHIP BREAK, AND FINISH LINE.

ALL AMERICAN WHEELING 15 CARS ON COURSE KEEPING AN EYE ON THE EVENT AND HELPING WITH COURSE MARKING, SWEEPING, AND GENERAL SAFETY OF RUNNERS.

BUNYA BELLES - CP1- IF YOU’D LIKE SOMEONE TO OPEN UP A CHECKPOINT AT MIDNIGHT,

WHO ELSE WOULD WE TRUST?!

CP1 - BUNYA BELLES THE GRAVEYARD SHIFT AND BUNYAVILLE TRAIL RUNNERS - DAY TIME SHIFT.

AND TO TOP IT OFF, THIS CHECKPOINT HAD TO IMPROVISE WITH SOME LOGISTICAL ISSUES WITH OUR ORDERED DELIVERY OF EQUIPMENT AND JUST WENT WITH THE FLOW! WHAT A CREW!! THANKS JANE SILCOX, LOUISE NYKVIST, HONOURARY BELLE GUS AND TEAM FOR LOOKING AFTER THE GRAVEYARD SHIFT & GRANT, SCOTT AND TEAM FOR HOLIDING THE DAY FORT

CP2 - MANNY AND NADINE FROM K2 BASE CAMP

YOU LOT ARE NOT ONLY TOTAL GUNS WITH CAMPING, CLIMBING AND HIKING, BUT ALSO WITH LOOKING AFTER ULTRA-TRAIL RUNNERS AS THEY JUST SURPASS THEIR MARATHON DISTANCE.

A TOTALLY WELL OILED MACHINE FOR SURE. IT WAS A TOTAL PLEASURE TO BE WORKING RIGHT NEXT DOOR TO THIS TEAM.WE ALSO CANT FORGET PHOEBE WHO FITTED SO MANY QUESTIONS AT GEAR CHECKS (she was so knowledgeable that everyone thought she was BTU!;) AND RACE PACK PICK UP, AND BAM AT EVERYWHERE!

CP3 THANKS TO GILLIAN DAVISON & JULIE ELLETT

CP3 - THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT CHECK POINT TO SORT AND AS THE 100 MILE RUNNERS ARE ALREADY 65KM IN, THEY ALSO HAVE ALMOST 100KM TO GO! THE CARE AND TIME GILL AND JULIE PUT INTO THESE RUNNERS IS IMMENSE AND A HUGE THANK YOU.

JULIE MANY OF YOU WILL KNOW AND LOVEFROM THE MT GLORIOUS 1/2 MARATHON

CP4 - AAA RACING - ALUN DAVIES WAS EVERYWHERE & CHERYL KIERNAN MANNED THE FORT AT DUNDAS BUSH CAMP. THE HALF WAY MARK FOR THE 100 MILE RUNNERS IS A VERY IMPORTANT ONE AND WE COULD NOT HAVE ASKED FOR A BETTER PERSON TO LOOK AFTER OUR RUNNERS THAN CHERYL AND ALUN. THE EXPERIENCE THEY BRING AND THE COMFORT FOR US OF KNOWING OUR RUNNERS ARE LOOKED AFTER IS VERY REASSURING

Alun was also integral in helping us logistically between CP1 to CP5. That’s over 100km of course. From helping DNF runners out of course, to moving equipment around course to setting up and closing check points, he was able to make time to start races! We again thank you for your immense involvement. We feel the support from Alun, an experienced race directors adds so much to the BTU.

CP5 - LEIGH RICHMOND, SAM MOORE, FORREST AND THE SPRINGFIELD RUNNING COMMUNITY

The Gold Creek Reservoir is a hub of activity from the get go as all BTU ultra distances pass through here. It is also a critical point for many runners as they reach here in the cold and dark and windy. Tired legs and minds makes for a decision point as to whether they should continue or not. This crew kept runners going and worked very closely with medical and support when runners weren't able to. Amazingly, Leigh and Sam spent their Friday running around helping with setting up communications, course markin and even picking up nutritional supplies!!

CP6 - JODIE AND LINDA AND THE BRISBANE TRAIL RUNNERS ARMY

There are so many involved in BTR. The team behind Linda & Jodie are an army of well-oiled check point legends. Besides being open the longest, the BTR team also took on the start line for the 20km and finishing line for the 10km. Qnd how about the Red Bull Climb? This year, the BTR team also navigated through the tour de Brisbane road closures to add a little bit more work! Massive thank You for your support.
